During the last three years, McManus said, 17,000 people have been murdered in the drug cartel wars in Mexico, which is more than three times the amount of men and women lost in Iraq. Citing a report by the Social Contract Press, McManus also said as many as 2.7 million illegal immigrants voted during the 2008 election. "What other country allows people to vote who aren't citizens?" McManus said. Bills that would require voters to show ID like the one that failed during the last session of the Texas Legislature would be a step in the right direction, McManus said. However, he said, "lousy political leadership" defeats measures like that because they want illegal aliens on the voting roles supporting them in future years. While he said legal immigration is a positive thing for the U.S., he said the estimated cost for illegal immigrants is around $36 billion each year. For places like Midland, said the local business chapter's leader Ron Britton, the cost is extremely high especially in the emergency rooms where millions are used to care for people who aren't legally residing in the Tall City. "It is an economic problem too," he said, adding the John Birch Society works to educate people on issues, not to be a political group. The John Birch Society, according to its Web site, works to promote personal freedom and limited government as outlined in the Constitution. Like so many other problems in the U.S., McManus said, immigration issues could be solved if federal officials would stick to the Constitution. Article four, section four of the Constitution, he said, requires the federal government to protect states from invasion, not from military invasion, but invasion in general. Those in favor of amnesty for some, like the Federation for Immigration Reform, argue illegal immigrants are taking low-paying jobs most Americans don't want and would leave a gap particularly in the agricultural sectors if sent away. Plus, others argue, many are in the U.S. not causing problems, but working their way to be contributing members of society. McManus disagreed and said having illegal aliens taking low-paying jobs brings wages down and makes it more difficult for low-income individuals and recent graduates to find jobs and subsequently work their way up in the world.
